Scottish FA Innovation Hub
We are an evolving ecosystem focused on supporting innovation through football with an emphasis on social impact. The Hub will
become a go-to portal for anyone who wants to develop or support projects relating to football and social good within Scotland.
Why the Hub?
- Using Social Impact Partnerships and social outcome contracting models, the Hub will provide an ecosystem to connect private finance and to exchange knowledge and expertise from across sectors towards positive outcomes for sustainable community wellbeing
- We will work alongside football clubs, supporting them to evolve towards greater capacity, sustainability and robustness in all areas by bringing people and organisations together to develop, action and evaluate targeted projects for communities across the country
- This innovative model for Scotland offers substantial, affordable, positive development outcomes. These outcomes range from the individual level all the way through to co-created place-based development reaching disadvantaged communities.
- A similar collaborative sports-based approach has been successfully introduced in other UK nations and elsewhere across the world
- Social outcomes financing reduces risk by way of a public-private partnership, established to improve outcomes for populations through service provision. This mechanism allows up-front corporate or private investment funding with financial return for investors after outcomes are delivered, plus targeted private leadership and exchange of skills and knowledge. This approach is particularly useful for projects such as ours, which addresses multiple complex problems lying within the remit (and budget) of different departments
- Our approach sources resilient funding, free from the uncertainties of overstretched local government budgets
Why football?
The Scottish FA believes in the power of football to enrich and improve life in Scotland every day. The power of football brings communities together, builds lasting relationships and is a lifeline for millions of ordinary people.
Scotland has some of the best examples of community football clubs in Europe, clubs whose reach and impact extend far beyond the pitch. These community anchor organisations are ambitious, agile bodies who seek to address local issues. This is using the power of football to improve the wellbeing of all.
We believe that these key organisations are ideal delivery partners for outcome-based investment.

Tackling hard to reach groups
- People in Scotland not in education, employment or training can find a positive focus through community football, be supported with opportunities to build a better sense of self and belonging, and be a constructive part of their own and others’ holistic personal development thereby reducing the risk of antisocial behaviour
- Older and less mobile people can enjoy walking football to make social connections and improve their fitness and related physical and mental health outcomes
- Wheelchair users can engage with para football with similar benefits
- Refugees and New Scots can learn language skills, build fitness and resilience, and make friends to feel better connected to their new community
- Homeless people can benefit from the street soccer movement, addressing multiple issues for them and their communities
